Part of the Shaker ideal was to embody religious convictions in their furniture, artifacts, and architecture . Mr. Emlen recently taught a course on this topic at RISD. He is the author of Shaker Village Views: Illustrated Maps and Landscape Drawings by Shaker Artists of the Nineteenth Century (University Press of New England) and has published his research on the material life of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century America in the leading journals of American material culture.
