"Bearing Witness: The Press and September 11"

Thomas E. Heslin
Metropolitan Managing Editor
The Providence Journal

The words and images of last year's terror attacks are forever etched into our national consciousness. The attacks. The flames. The collapse. The enemy. The victims. The heroes. The war. It is all part of a new chapter in the unfolding American epic. Heslin described what it was like to work at an American newspaper on Sept. 11, and how journalists and newspapers covered the story in New York and across the United States. The discussion focussed on the challenges and responsibilities of the press in bringing the first draft of history to a free society.

Tom Heslin is the metropolitan managing editor of The Providence Journal. He has been with the paper for more than 20 years. In 1994, as managing editor of the investigative team, he shared the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting.
